by Jody Barney - Application Developer

Welcome to the multi-part video series that will teach you how to implement DataTables in your Claris FileMaker Pro solutions effectively. Whether you prefer reading, watching videos, or trying out demo files, we’ve got you covered. If you’re new to this series, we recommend starting from the introduction to maximize learning experience. You can access the complete series here: Master DataTables with Claris FileMaker Pro.

In the previous post, we previewed our very first report using the DataTables Builder!  We also discussed how to share the generated HTML file with stakeholders and demonstrated how to add the report into your solution.

In this post, we’re diving deep into the world of JavaScript functions and exploring the inner workings of DataTables.

Goal of this Video Series

In this series, we will use the DataTables Builder to delve into the core JavaScript functions and settings that power DataTables. Each lesson is designed to empower you with the knowledge and skills needed to modify DataTables with ease and understanding.

DataTables comes packed with a ton of built-in features that lay the foundation for your dynamic tables. We will uncover the possibilities to tweak and customize various settings. We will use a structured approach to learning and using DataTables, emphasizing customization, understanding core concepts, and gradually building a comprehensive knowledge of the tool’s capabilities.

The series will include six additional lessons and respective demo files to assist you. Let’s take a look at what will cover.

A Look Ahead…

We will utilize the DataTables Builder in the demo files to demonstrate the relationship between the code that drives DataTables and the settings developers can set to manipulate behavior. This approach ensures you understand the foundational aspects before exploring advanced features.

At the end of the series on JS Functions, you should be able to identify what settings can be changed, where you make modifications to the code, and how to enhance your reports by adding libraries and extensions.  The following topics will be covered in detail.

  • DataTables Libraries
  • DOM Elements
  • Searching
  • Pagination
  • Default Page Length
  • Other DataTables Settings

What’s new?

A few updates to the demo files have been made from the prior series.  You will note that all videos, demo files, reports, and references will use the 2.x identifier.  The code templates used to create each DataTables report have been updated to assist learning.  We are starting with the basics and will modify the template and code as we continue to learn.  A new button action, “Update Code” was added to the demo file, and its purpose is covered in the series.

What’s next?

In the next post, we’re diving deep into the world of DataTables Libraries, the code driving the foundation of DataTables.  Let’s get ready to learn about JS Functions in DataTables!
