Master DataTables Series: 4.0 Introduction to On-click Integrations

by Jody Barney - Application Developer

Welcome to the multi-part video series that will teach you how to implement DataTables in your Claris FileMaker Pro solutions effectively. If you’re new to this series, we recommend starting from the introduction to maximize your learning experience. You can access the complete series here: Master DataTables with Claris FileMaker Pro.

In the previous video series, we learned how to alter the appearance of our DataTables reports by modifying columns.

In this series, we will examine the world of integrations, specifically focusing on how we can link user interactions within DataTables to perform FileMaker scripts.

Understanding Integrations

At its core, an integration in the context of DataTables allows you to bind user interactions within a DataTables report to FileMaker scripts or actions. It’s like creating a bridge that connects what happens in the report to what FileMaker should do in response.

To illustrate this concept, let’s look at an example. Imagine you have a built a report using DataTables that lists active customers. If a user clicks on a particular row, value, or button, you can configure an integration to instruct FileMaker to execute a specific script. You can set the integration to respond to a click on a particular cell to email that contact or build an integration that occurs when a user presses a custom button that asks FileMaker to open a card window to enter a new contact.

Let’s Get Started

In this series, we will walk you through the necessary settings to achieve these integrations. You will be guided on how to add an on-row click action, a cell click action, as well as adding buttons to rows and the table itself. I have created a demo file for each lesson to help you grasp these concepts more effectively.

What’s new?

It’s important to note that I have made substantial changes while transitioning from version 3.0 to version 4.0 of Mastering DataTables in FileMaker Pro. Therefore, if you are using an older version, I strongly recommend downloading and using version 4.1 to stay in sync with this series. This way, you will have access to all the latest features, enhancements, and code changes that have been implemented.

What’s next?

In the next post of this series, we will begin by exploring the integration settings. Join me there, download the demo file and let’s get started on your journey to mastering integrations using DataTables.
